The Program in Asian Studies at Bates College, a private liberal arts college located in central Maine with a rich history of diverse coeducation, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Japanese Language and Asian Studies to begin August 2023. We seek applicants with expertise in pre-modern Japan and with broader interdisciplinary interests. The successful candidate will contribute to an interdisciplinary program in which students study Japanese and Chinese languages as well as cultures in Asia. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching Japanese language at all levels. The teaching load is five courses per year: typically two courses in Japanese lang
